Untitled Unofficial TNO TTRPG Stealth & Clothing Update
Hey, it's Chris with a new update for Untitled Unofficial TNO TTRPG. This one's going to be a big one, so be sure to download the most recent version on itch.io.
Clothing
Clothing is now a thing in the game. While I originally planned on it being purely cosmetic, some of you pointed out that a person's clothing can affect how people interact with them. If somebody shows up dressed as a cossack, people are going to react differently than if they were dressed like a soldier. Depending on what you wear, people might think you're somebody else, which can allow you to get into places you'd otherwise be kept out of.
Which brings me to my next feature...
Stealth
Yup, this game now has a stealth system. Well, technically, there are two types of stealth.
First is the disguise-based stealth where characters can use a combination of Charisma and disguises to access places they would normally be allowed to enter. Think Agent 47 from the Hitman games, because that was one of the big inspirations for this.
Meanwhile, sight-based stealth will see characters moving out of the line-of-sight of NPCs. One of the inspirations for this one is the Metal Gear Solid series of games, where line-of-sight is a key mechanic.
Disguise-Based Stealth
Characters can use a combination of their Charisma skill and disguises manipulate, gaslight, or otherwise deceive people thinking the character's somebody they're not. There are two types of clothing that can be used for disguises: faction clothing and occupational clothing.
Faction clothing is, as the name implies, clothing that belongs to a specific faction. If you wear a specific faction's clothing and act like the person you're disguised as, you can convince people that is what you are. For example, you could dress as a member of the Irkutsk NKVD and acting like a massive prick to convince people you're an member of Yagoda's NKVD.
The one catch is that if other factions see you dressed like that, there's a good chance they'll think you actually are part of that faction.
Occupational clothing, on the other hand, doesn't belong to any faction, but it still can be used to disguise yourself as a specific role. For example, if you carry around tools while wearing a mechanic's jumpsuit, people in Omsk, Tomsk, Magadan, and Samara are going to assume you're some sort of mechanic or repairman.
It goes without saying that people will probably get suspicious of you if you get too close or do something that the person you're disguised as wouldn't do. For example, if you're disguised as a mechanic in order to plant explosives in a factory, you will need a really good explanation if somebody notices you planting explosives.
Or you could just quietly kill them and hide their body before the alert system gets triggered.
Sight-Based Stealth
The other is a sight-based type of stealth, where players use cover and quiet elimination to sneak past the guards. Unlike disguises, which allow a player to hide in plain sight, this type of stealth encourages players to stay out of the line-of-sight of hostile NPCs.
The good news is that NPCs can't see you if you're behind heavy cover, or you're directly behind partial cover. For example, the shaded squares in the below picture show the line of sight for a person (represented by the triangle) looking into this building through the front door:

The bad news is that there is now an alert system that can lead to NPCs trying to hunt you down if they notice something is wrong.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why was there no update last week?
A: A combination of a new US release and 4th of July weekend. Also, I was hanging out with my family as the designated driver.
Q: Why doesn't clothing have bonuses/debuffs?
A: I know a lot of games like Fallout do that, but I don't think it'd really work in this context. If you're a GM and you want to give bonuses/debuffs, go ahead.
Q: What's next?
A: Honestly, I don't know. Probably playtesting, maybe organizing a session in the community. I have some ideas planned, but I need to flesh them out.
Conclusion
Anyways, that should do it with this update. Have fun!
